The Age of Musical Expression
A wonderful tool that is sometimes underestimated
All societies have some sort of music regardless of the cultural backgrounds that they espouse. When we talk of music and society we are looking at a marriage that is made in heaven. Music is really the production of organized sound. We start to make music when we copy tunes that we hear on radio. Our vocal codes are created in such a way that they can control the sound and the production of that volume. In the end we decide that some music is good and enjoyable while other music is not really up to scratch. As the complicated sounds develop the society will start to set rules for the music. We can also use instruments to produce music. The sound that comes from the organ is totally different from the sound that comes from the piano and yet they are both beautiful in their own way. You can never fully describe the beauties of a human voice.
Even in that category we have the Soprano, Alto, Tenor and Bass connotations. These are then classified a bit further until you reach some of the great sounds that we see in the commercial choirs. The nobility of music cannot be corrupted and we see some of the greatest sounds on the planet coming out of simple voices. Music then plays another role in the community. Initially we will have music for entertainment. You look at the dances that are seen in the Austrian Waltz and then the mesmerizing African beats. You then have the tremolo of the Eastern tradition. When people hear music they stand to dance. Dance is a social activity so this is yet another cohesion role for the music that we hear. Music can also educate us on our cultures. It is the preservation of people in the most fundamental way. Those people that are blessed enough to see the grand arias by the great artists will give us an overview of what music can be.
When you see Maria Callas give her great rendition of Bellini’s “Norma”, you are transported to the magical world of the druid priests and the divas that are capable of the most amazing coloratura. You then move to the modern age and see Michael Jackson completely mesmerize the audience on one of his live concerts. The sound of Whitney Houston at her height is equally unmatched in its presence. These are the lessons that connect music and society. We are a musical species and we have used this format to express some of our deepest emotions. You can be a great artist and a great singer but the combination of the two is rare. The community rewards those that can product music. We go to their concerts and faint when they speak to us. That is the height of our adulation for musical expression. It is what makes us human beings. It is the foundation of the community in expression and Cultural Revolution. Music and society is a universal concept. |
